Three frat boys learn that a girl's life isn't all bubble baths and dream dates when they're forced to don drag in defense of their reputations. Kappa Omicron Kappa (yes, it spells what you think) rowdies Dave (Barry Watson, of TV's 7th Heaven), Adam (Michael Rosenbaum, of TV's Smallville) and Doofer (Harland Williams) are ignominiously bounced from their beloved frat for stealing funds earmarked for the annual KOK-tail Cruise, where seniors schmooze with well-connected alumni. Dave thinks weasely KOK president Spence (Brad Beyer) framed them, and learns of a secret videotape that could clear their names. Unfortunately, the tape is in horn-dog Adam's closet, and they're all barred from the frat house. So they decide to sneak in under cover of a drunken beer bash, disguised as girls. The boys don't get the tape, but they do get a taste of what it's like to be on the wrong side of a beloved KOK tradition: They're thrown out during a round of "dogcatcher," a mean-spirited ritual designed to humiliate ugly girls. Tangled in a net, panties in a twist, Adam, Dave and Doofer are dumped on the lawn of neighboring sorority Delta Omicron Gamma (which also spells what you think), whose insufficiently foxy members have been tormented relentlessly by generations of KOK boys. The girls take pity on their ungainly sisters, who quickly rename themselves Adina, Daisy and Roberta and pledge DOG so they'll have a base of operations. "Everything's so clean," marvels Doofer/Roberta of their new digs. And so begins the TOOTSIE (1982) crash course: Men treat women badly, especially women who don't look like Sports Illustrated swimsuit models. Locker room talk is demeaning. It's hard to get pretty clothes in large sizes. The first and worst lesson is that Doofer, Dave and Adam wouldn't date Roberta, Daisy and Adina on a dare: Adam is especially wounded when frat-boy Neanderthals just like him mock Adina's fat ass. And then there's the inevitable romantic muddle: Dave falls for DOG president Leah (Melissa Sagemiller), a closet cutie in glasses. Leah thinks Dave is a pig, but likes Daisy. In fact, she likes Daisy so much, she indulges in a little lesbian flirtation very awkward indeed for Daisy/Dave. All's well that ends well, and rest assured, the consciousness-raising lessons are cloaked in gross-out gags, and whenever things threaten to get heavy, a dick joke or a balls-to-the-wall catfight in drag (with candy-colored dildos, yet) brings the proceedings back to groin level.
