Robeson's powerful persona helps carry this film, in which he plays Zinga, a British dockhand-turned-singer and descendant of an African queen. Though happily married to Welch, he decides to go to Africa and trace his ancestry. All he has to go on in finding his forebears is a medallion,

which leads him to the discovery that he is heir to the throne of Cazanga. The film then centers on Robeson's efforts to help the islanders rid their land of disease through modern medicine and of domination by witch doctors. The plot of the film is believed to be based on an African legend.
