Documentary-like story of how a family copes in postwar Berlin and the struggles they encounter. Supposedly fiction, this story has very real touches to it. Many shots entail kids playing among ruined buildings or people dealing with black marketeers, emphasizing the shortage of goods. The depressing film has a worn-out soldier returning from a prisoner-of-war camp to his family, trying to put the pieces of his life back together amidst the rubble. There is some good symbolic imagery, but too many unanswered questions hamper this half-powerful film, one of the earliest post-WW II pictures made at the new state-owned DEFA studio with Soviet help. (MURDERERS AMONG US, 1946, was the first.) (In German; English subtitles.)
