The writer/director team behind the hugely successful NOT LOVE, JUST FRENZY (1996), about the hectic lives of oversexed Madrid 20-year-olds, move on to a slightly older crowd in this sleek soap opera. Vivacious Marga (Emma Suárez) doesn't think much of men until she meets Roberto (Adriá Collado), who's handsome, kind and sexy. They begin dating and then, right after they've moved in together, tragedy strikes: Roberto dies in a car crash. In the immediate aftermath of the accident, Marga learns that she's seven weeks pregnant and has just lost her job. Her slutty, back-stabbing friend Tini (Rosana Pastor), who helped get Marga fired, offers to introduce her to a doctor who can perform an abortion, but Marga chooses to have her baby and embark on life as a young single mother. Marga's gay best friend, Jose (Alex Brendmühl), helps her get back on her feet, and she makes a new friend in Rosa (Mirtha Ibarra), who came to Spain from Cuba because of a man and then dumped him when he hit her. Rosa adores children and exchanges baby-sitting services for room and board, but she also encourages Marga to have fun and start dating again. Marga finds a new job at a video store, then buys the place when her flighty boss decides to go into the gym business with her new boyfriend. It looks as though everything's finally coming together when Marga meets Inaqui (Juan Diego Botto), who's cute, nice and totally into her — so what if he's ten years Marga's junior? It turns out that the age difference isn't the problem; the problem is that Inaqui's gay. All their friends say there's no future in the relationship, but Inaqui and Marga both hope that true love will smooth over their differences. Sobrevivire means "I will survive," and Marga and her friends weather heartbreak, poverty, disapproving families, betrayal and loneliness on their paths to true love and happiness. Like NOT LOVE, JUST FRENZY, this is a shameless, straightforward soap opera (no Almodovarian excess here!), but it's pretty entertaining on its own sudsy terms. (In Spanish, with subtitles)
