SKY BANDITS tells the story of two clownish bank robbers in the waning days of the Old West, Luke (Jeff Osterhage) and Barney (Scott McGinnis). When the law finally catches up with them, they must choose between prison and the Army, and before you can say "The War to End All Wars" Luke and

Barney are in the trenches in France. They manage to join a British fighter squadron commanded by Bannock (Miles Anderson), whose sole objective is to down a massive German dirigible that regularly wreaks havoc over the Allied lines. The fliers always bear the brunt of their actions, and every

landing is a crash, though the planes are constantly put together in ever more outlandish fashion by resident aeronautical genius Fritz (Ronald Lacey), a Briton who has had his head shaken in so many crash landings that he speaks with a German accent. Naturally, the boys pick up flying in no time,

eventually becoming the only ones who can stop the zeppelin's predations. The leads are wooden and the script inane, but the flying scenes are hilarious, with unlikely looking bags of canvas, string, and cannibalized parts lumbering down the runway. The real star, though, is the gargantuan

dirigible; a fantastic airship so big that the top disappears in the clouds when it is tied to the ground. A first feature from Zoran Perisic, an Oscar-winning special effects whiz from SUPERMAN, SKY BANDITS cost some $18 million and quickly disappeared from sight.
