An erotic thriller that is not thrilling and hardly erotic, SINFUL INTRIGUE has a plot that is mainly a gratuitous excuse for shots of women's breasts.
Stephanie (Beckie Mullen) is fixing dinner when she is grabbed by an intruder. We learn immediately that this is her husband, Adam (Bobby Johnston), and that he likes to play act during sex. They fight over this while their caretaker, Jake (Mark Zuelke), watches. Jake suffers from post-traumatic
stress syndrome since the death of his wife. Adam, a contractor, is seduced by Cindy (Griffin Drew), his client. Cindy is in cahoots with Yvette (Pia Reyes), who runs a lesbian retreat of sorts, to bilk Stephanie of her riches.
Meanwhile, several local women are assaulted by a masked stranger. The police harass Jake, who previously had been charged with the murder of his wife but was released after two hung juries. Suspecting Adam's infidelity, Stephanie flirts with Jake, who still is tormented by his wife's death.
Stephanie herself is caught by the stranger, who turns out to be Cindy. Her plan is to kill Stephanie, marry Adam, then kill him to inherit the money. Jake bursts in as Stephanie breaks free and kicks Cindy out of the window to her death. The film ends with Stephanie throwing Adam out and settling
down with Jake.
It's hard to think of a film this bland and boring as a thriller of any sorts. Even the box refers to it as a "Mature Mystery" rather than the common "Erotic Thriller" designation. Immature would be more like it, as it is hard to imagine anyone thinking that these so-called erotic sequences are
arousing to anyone beyond adolescence. There is almost no sex, just writhing and stroking. The actors, when not posing, read their lines as if from cue cards. In one scene, Adam has Stephanie recite lines to get him aroused, recalling the final scene from CARNAL KNOWLEDGE. A movie this bad should
know better than to draw comparisons to another, infinitely better, work.(Extensive nudity, sexual situations, profanity.)
