After tracking down a wanted murderer and then killing him, U.S. Marshal Bronson finds that his victim was respected in the town of his death. None of the townspeople will identify the corpse, which means that Bronson can't collect his bounty. This forces Bronson to look at his life and

why he is what he is. This interesting psychological western is a well scripted, nicely directed piece that goes well beyond it's programmer budget. Bronson gives one of his better performances as the tortured man, with fine support from Mathews as a madame and Carradine, the town

barber/undertaker. Fowler was better known for directing such films as I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF (1956) and I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE (1959) but shows that he had much more going for him than those films might have suggested. Despite some good critical reaction, the studio failed to

realize Bronson's potential. SHOWDOWN AT BOOT HILL was dumped into action theaters as a double feature filler and was largely ignored. Though Bronson (sans his famous Fu Manchu moustache) shows some real talent, it would take him ten more years and a new career in European films before he would

become a star. Perhaps audiences of the 1950s were not yet ready for as untraditional a leading man as Bronson.
