When the former sheriff of Abilene returns home from the Civil War, he brings with him a troubled mind and a reluctance towards guns. Mahoney plays the man who finds his troubles compounded because he's killed his old friend Bettger's brother accidentally during the war. On his return he

finds Bettger has taken his girl (Hyer) and has also been dealing in land grabbing from farmers. Mahoney must overcome his troubles and stop the former friend from his villainous activities. Though the plot is routine, the direction is well paced and creates some intelligent sequences, lifting

this film to a higher level than the typical B Western. The characters are nicely fleshed out and believable, with color photography used to the best advantage. Remade in 1967 as GUNFIGHT IN ABILENE.
