Kulle plays a Swedish lieutenant who goes to an isolated isle off the Lapland coast for a summer to escape social pressures. There he meets Gill and rents a hunting lodge from him. Gill's daughter, Andersson, is attracted to the stranger, but she repels his advances because she does not

trust men. Soon, however, he shows her how beautiful love is and gains her trust. But then she becomes jealous of Ullmann, her father's mistress, who has also attracted Kulle. Gill notices that his mistress and daughter are becoming increasingly intolerant of his brutal nature; in retaliation, he

brings Kjellson, a baron who previously tried to woo Andersson, to the island. Gill tells Andersson that her lover and Ullmann are having an affair. She won't believe him; but when she catches the two locked in an embrace, she is crushed and announces her engagement to the baron. Gill tries to

seduce his former mistress, but she runs off into the mountains. Kulle fires off some shots as a signal to Andersson, and the noise triggers an avalanche that kills Ullmann. Gill becomes crazed with anger and sets fire to the hunting lodge as vengeance. Kulle realizes he must leave the island and

tries to make peace with Andersson before going. However, she is still devastated by the course of events and rejects him. A noble attempt to put author Hamsun's great work on film, which totally misses the mystical lyricism of the prose.
