director, producer, and screenwriter of the much better TRUE GRIT, SHOOT OUT suffers from lethargic direction and some unbelievably hammy performances. Peck merely walks through his role and is too nice to be believed as a vengeful man; Lyons overacts with enormous zeal. The scenery is well used,

however, with some beautiful mountain settings to be enjoyed, but it's not enough to make the film work. The result is a boring, inconsequential western. This is a remake of the 1934 film THE LONE COWBOY.
