The dynamics of a father's relationship with his teenage daughter certainly seems a subject worthy of cinematic exploration, but SHE'S OUT OF CONTROL is not the way to do it. Doug Simpson (Tony Danza) is general manager of the beleaguered KHEY, an FM oldies station that's steadily

plummeting in the ratings. Widower Simpson's bigger concerns are his young daughters. Brainy, gawky Katie (Ami Dolenz) is just turning 15, and Simpson's girl friend, Janet (Catherine), takes her on an all-out makeover spree. When Simpson returns, his home has turned into "dating central," with

phones and doorbells constantly ringing. Unable to accept his daughter's transition into womanhood, he vows to screen every suitor who comes near her, and becomes obsessed with her while his radio station's numbers continue to slide. This leads to all manner of trivial, pseudo-comic shenanigans,

but not to any insight, comic or otherwise, into the emotional realities of father-daughter relationships. Why does Hollywood make TV movies and palm them off as theatrical releases? SHE'S OUT OF CONTROL would have done far better in the TV ratings than it did at the box office. It has all the

production pluses of national ad campaigns: smart art direction, lighting, and costume design; a catchy mix of old and new rock'n'roll on the soundtrack. Unfortunately, SHE'S OUT OF CONTROL also resembles commercials in that it hopes to appeal to everyone and basically endears itself to no one.
