This black comedy is long on surrealism but short on laughs. Oliver Shadey (Antony Sher) is a London auto mechanic who longs to undergo a sex-change operation, but he needs 12,000 pounds sterling to pay for the surgery. Blessed with the ability to not only read people's thoughts and

picture occurrences thousands of miles away but also to transfer those images to film, Shadey approaches wealthy industrialist Sir Cyril Landau (Patrick Macnee) with a scheme that will profit both men. The biggest problem with SHADEY is that it just isn't very funny. Screenwriter Snoo Wilson has

unquestionably come up with an interesting premise; however, the dreamscape he creates from it offers little that one can get a hold of. Though he hasn't been given much by the script, Sher, nonetheless, appears to have been miscast. Macnee turns in the best of the other performances, which are

competent but unexceptional.
