Porn star Annabel Chong (civilian name: Grace Quek) briefly made headlines in 1991 by participating in "The World's Biggest Gang-Bang," during which she had sex on camera with 251 men in 10 hours. It's hard to say which is more disturbing: Quek's

detached and dogmatic analysis of her motivations, or the fact that her record was quickly and repeatedly broken. Documentarian Gough Lewis first saw Quek on The Jerry Springer Show and filmed her for two years (he neglects to mention that they were dating during at least part of that

time); his portrait of a sheltered girl who left law school to become a porn actress is an eye-opener. Quek entered the porn field while pursuing a degree at USC, and has been celebrated as an unusually intelligent and self-aware player in the world of adult films. She has a good line of academic

patter about reclaiming the female sexual experience from male-generated stereotypes and deconstructing sexual discourse, but in the larger context of Lewis's film it rings exceptionally hollow. Born in Singapore in 1972, Quek's upbringing as the convent-schooled daughter of two schoolteachers

left her feeling frustrated and oppressed. She moved to London to attend law school and was the victim of a brutal sexual assault, the lingering effects of which she downplays rather unconvincingly. Quek's confident feminist declarations are at odds with her self-destructive behavior and juvenile

need to shock, and the scene in which she tells her weeping mother (who didn't know she was being filmed) about her porn career is just plain horrifying — even exploitative. But, at the same time, Quek is clearly thoughtful, intellectually curious and refreshingly bold; you come away from the

film wishing her the best, but fearing the worst.
