There's little that can't be solved by an impromptu road trip, so when an early midlife crisis-inducing bombshell explodes at the feet of handsome, 36-year-old chef Jesse Campbell (Tim Daly), he's in his Mustang faster than you can say "fill 'er up and

check the spare." Paul has a wonderful girlfriend named Hannah (Olivia D'Abo), a restaurateur whose birthday he's just clouded with a boorishly inappropriate gift. But a phone call from old girlfriend Anabeth (Laura Leighton), who's about to get married but thinks she might be making a terrible

mistake, sends him into a tailspin. And that's before she's killed in a freak accident while he's still on the line. Jesse's ultimate destination is Anabeth's funeral despite warnings he won't be welcome, since he's the guy who broke her heart mere days before they were supposed to

get married. But the real point of the trip is a series of surprise visits to all of Jesse's old girlfriends, so he can ask them what the hell he keeps doing wrong. The exes include high school sweetheart Marie (Mimi Rogers); freewheeling actress Peri (Katy Silverstone); college squeeze Martha

(Elizabeth Peña), whose lesbian baby shower Jesse crashes; and Lisa (Jami Gertz), who's still so mad it's a wonder her look doesn't turn Jesse to stone. Writer/director Paul Lazarus has spent the last 10 years helming sitcoms, from Dream On to Everybody Loves Raymond, so the

glib, shallow feel of his feature debut was probably inevitable. But despite the slick surface and goofy slapstick interludes, Lazarus's script gets off some perceptive observations about the nature of true love. Among the girlfriends, Peña and Rogers are standouts, and props to any movie

in which a pretty girl in a gauzy white scarf pulls an Isadora Duncan in the first 10 minutes.
