Ariane (Jane Birkin) and her two lovers travel across the country in a convertible making a game of life and love in SERIOUS ABOUT PLEASURE. Released in France in 1975, the film was made available in the US home video market in 1995.

Ariane, Patrice (Georges Mansart), and Bruno (Richard Leduc) share the same bed in a Parisian flat and the same sense of friendship and freedom. When they win a cash prize, they set out on a random adventure, stopping only to ask pedestrians which way they should go next. The three lovers enjoy

using others as props in their games. In one amusing scene Patrice and Bruno bring home two women, and Ariane pretends to be the English maid. In another, they play on the desires of the hotel guests by creating fictitious roles for each other and arranging amorous rendezvous they will never keep.

In one rather surreal scene, they purchase a basket of bad apples and affix them to a leafless tree, playing at a make-believe paradise.

The only moment of seriousness in the film occurs when Ariane becomes pregnant, and a chill of reality passes through the affair. Each sets off alone, only to be reunited with the others on a train. The fun commences all over again. Ten years later they are still together, proud parents of a young

boy.

The film is set to sweet light music and coated with the ambiance of 1970s French erotic comedy, light as whipped cream and bubble baths. There is a hollow attempt to portray the characters as living romantic and creative lives--they read poetry in bed, Ariane works in a gallery, and Bruno works

for a publisher of illicit literary titles. This is harmless fun, but a frivolous offshoot of Truffaut's infinitely more interesting JULES AND JIM (1962). (Nudity.)
