This mostly light-hearted comedy was written by Bergman during what he considered a dark time in his life--which seems strange, considering how much fun the film is. Divided into three parts, SECRETS OF WOMEN is told in flashback as the wives of the Lobelius brothers converse about past

romantic experiences. The first section (based on a Bergman play) relates the tale of Rakel's (Anita Bjork) infidelity with an old lover, the second depicts Marta's (Maj-Britt Nilsson) Parisian affair and subsequent marriage to Martin (Birger Malmsten), and the last takes place in a broken

elevator that strands Karin (Eva Dahlbeck) and husband Fredrik (Gunnar Bjornstrand). At the conclusion of these three stories, a fourth Lobelius wife (Aino Taube) decides to keep her story to herself. Although this is one of several well-received comedies that Bergman somewhat grudgingly turned

out at the request of the Swedish film industry in the 1950s, it still shows a deliberate attempt on the director's part to advance his cinematic style. In the elevator sequence especially, Bergman, under the influence of Alfred Hitchcock, tried primarily to let images tell his story, keeping the

dialogue to a minimum.
