One of the best of the "Lone Wolf" series of detective films, and the first directed by Edward Dmytryk, who injected some clever humor into the series. This time out, William is hired to advise the police on how to prevent the priceless Napoleon jewels from being stolen once they arrive on

a steamship. Meanwhile, William's loyal butler Blore is mistaken for his boss by a gang of international jewel thieves who draft him to assist in their theft of the very jewels William is supposed to be guarding. Blore decides to go along with the plan in order to get enough evidence to capture

the notorious criminals. He cons the crooks into coming to William's apartment where his boss can capture them, but William screws up and the thieves escape, leaving him the most likely suspect in the eyes of the law. Eventually he clears himself by chasing after the crooks and discovering where

they've hidden the jewels.
