Patience (Tara MacGowran) is an ugly duckling at the school. Her home life is dull, and the school provides what little excitement occurs in her bleak existence. Enter Laura Meister (Marie-Theres Relin, daughter of Maria Schell), a sophisticated refugee from Germany. Patience and Laura become best

friends and develop a minor schoolgirl crush on each other. But the other girls at the school and some of the teachers think that it would be best if Patience and Laura don't see each other as they fear the two will become lesbians (or so it's understated). Nothing much happens, but the period is

evoked well, as is life in a segregated school. A pleasant movie with more story than drama. Much of what transpires happens off the screen, and we are only given hearsay, thus violating the essential cinematic rule of "show, don't tell."
