The final film in the SAMURAI series from Japan's Toho studios finds Mifune being challenged to a duel by his rival, Tsuruta. However, Mifune asks that the duel be put off temporarily, and his foe agrees. Mifune's woes continue as he is followed by two women who love the warrior. He

settles in a farming village that has been overrun by bandits and attempts to teach the locals a few things about self-defense. The bandits kidnap one of Mifune's women and attack the village using her to fool everyone. She dies, and Mifune decides to settle down with Yachigusa, the other woman.

His brief moment of happiness is interrupted when Tsuruta returns for the challenge. They meet on Ganryu Island for the long-awaited duel, which Mifune wins. He returns home hoping that his troubles are over. This movie was released in Japan in 1956, though it first appeared in the US in 1967.
