A stranger leaps from a train and ends up in a small Polish village. To the bewilderment of the residents, he claims to have lived there once before. No one recognizes him, but one family takes him in. However, the stranger refuses to reveal his past. All he says is that he changed his

name from Kowalski to Malinowski as certain people following him would prefer him dead. The stranger's presence creates a weird aura that affects the entire population and soon the normally blase villagers are opening up their innermost feelings. The stranger seemingly cures two sick children by a

miracle, then seduces his host's daughter. At a village gathering, he teaches a special dance called the salto. This throws the villagers into a strange hypnotic trance. But suddenly everything is wrenched into the open when a woman with her two children arrives and announces she is the man's

wife. She claims her husband is little more than a womanizing faker and the villagers respond by stoning the stranger. He grabs the next train leaving town. Ironically, actor Cybulski--the frog-mouthed, sunglasses-wearing angry young man of such films as Andrzej Wajda's ASHES AND DIAMONDS (1958)

--died in a railway accident a year following the U.S. release of SALTO, which begins and ends with scenes of a railway.
