Bridges, Massen, Emery, Beery, and O'Brian are the crew of a spaceship bound for the moon. A meteor storm knocks them far off course and they end up landing on Mars. Exploring the planet, they find the ruins of a great civilization that was destroyed by nuclear war. Soon blind, mutated

survivors of this civilization appear and attack our intrepid quintet of explorers and by the time they get back to their ship they've been reduced to a trio. The rocketship blasts off and heads back to Earth, but--not being intended for such a long journey--it runs out of fuel short of home and,

after radioing a message back to base about the dangers of nuclear war, it crashes to Earth, killing the rest of the crew. One of the first of the post-WW II generation of American science-fiction films, this production was made to compete directly with George Pal's DESTINATION MOON (also 1950).

Director Neumann heard about Pal's work-in-progress and approached Robert Lippert with the idea of shooting a low-budget space movie to beat Pal into the theaters. To save the cost of building a moon set, they placed the action on Mars and shot on location at Red Rock Canyon, tinting the scenes

red. The film did beat Pal's detailed, expensive, and rather dull film into the theaters by several months and did excellent business. Today the film in many ways seems better than DESTINATION MOON, less pretentious and a lot more exciting. In 1978, Wade Williams shot some new special effects

sequences and long shots of actors dressed in the original costumes and added them to a restored print of the film that can be seen on videocassette.
