When tickets for an upcoming concert by her favorite rock band, the Ramones, go on sale, aspiring teenage songwriter Riff Randell (P.J. Soles) skips school to be the first in line, enraging Evelyn Togar (Mary Woronov), the no-nonsense principal of Vince Lombardi High School, who has

dedicated herself to putting an end to her charges' obsession with rock 'n' roll. Aided by a couple of aggressive henchmen (Loren Lester and Daniel Davies), Togar does everything in her power to see that no backbeat bopping deters her students from their studies, including confiscating all of the

Ramones' concert tickets Riff has purchased. Meanwhile, under the guidance of the school's resident operator, Eaglebauer (Clint Howard), Tom Roberts (Vince Van Patten), a handsome but hopelessly unhip football player, pursues Riff, while smart but not particularly sexy Kate Rambeau (Dey Young)

tries to win Tom's affections. The action heats up--both in Tom's van and between Togar and the students--and after an attempted record burning, Riff, the kids, and the Ramones prove once again that winning isn't everything, it's the only thing, turning Lombardi High into Rock 'n' Roll High

School. Written by Joe Dante and directed by Allan Arkush, this refreshingly wacky teenage film is filled with warped humor (including mice exploding to Ramones music), and makes wonderful use of the "so dumb they're smart" Ramones, who stepped to the fore when Cheap Trick backed out of the

project. Nothing is taken seriously and nothing should be--it's only rock 'n' roll.
