English-language remakes of successful foreign films are rarely a good idea, but Gore Verbinski's close do-over of the phenomenally popular and absolutely terrifying Japanese ghost story RING (1998) is a shivery surprise: a frighteningly good horror movie with enough solid scares to freeze the blood of ardent fans and newcomers alike. It begins with the mysterious death of 16-year-old Seattle high-schooler Katie (Amber Tamblyn), found in a closet with her face horribly contor... read more
  • February 2, 2007: ... And They Lived | Masters of Horror | 2/5/2007
Well, this is it — the last post for Masters of Horror Season 2. I still haven't read or heard whether or not there will be a Season 3, but I sure do hope so. As soon as I find out, I'll definitely post it here. I thought that Season 2 wound up being pretty damn good, with four episodes now filling some slots in my top 10 favorites:1. "Fair-haired Child" (Season 1)2. "The Black Cat" (Season 2)3. "Pelts" (Season 2)4. "Cigarette Burns" (Season 1)5. "Right to Die" (Season 2)6. "The Screwfly Solution" (Season 2)7. "Imprint" (Season 1, aka "The Banned Episode")8. "Dance of the Dead" (Season 1)9. "Deer Woman" (Season 1)10. "Dreams in the Witch-House" (Season 1)As you can see, the final episode of this season, "Dream Cruise," didn't make it into my top favorites, but I also didn't find it to be a particularly bad episode. The story was interesting enough, even though it conjured up similar specters from other J-horror films like Ju-on: The Grudge and The Ring (Ringu). Some of it... read more
  • October 26, 2006: Masters of Horror 101 | Masters of Horror | 10/27/2006
Ah... my favorite time of year... the leaves are turning, Halloween plans churning, and Masters of Horror Season 2 is off to a screaming premiere tomorrow night [10PM ET/PT on Showtime]. As I weave my dark tvguide.com web here for the new season, I wanted to give Season 1 a short "re-capitation," and take us all through Season 2 "ghoul school."The Premise and The ExtremeMasters of Horror began as a dinner conversation among acclaimed horror directors, which soon became TV history-in-the-making. Director Mick Garris became the series Creator and Executive Producer, and his vision was to allow the "chosen 13" directors as much creative freedom possible. Showtime was up for this premise, and without MPAA intervention, 13 seriously extreme 1-hour horror films found a home on cable TV.And Then There Were 12The horror and cult community eagerly anticipated the 13th and final episode, directed by Japan's legendary Takashi Miike [Audition; Ichi the Killer]. However, finding it way too... read more
  • Meet The Ring Girl | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 2/18/2004
Child stars tend to scare us. But not 13-year-old Daveigh Chase. Yeah, she played Samara Morgan, the undead brat who crawled out of the TV screen to scare her victims to death in The Ring. And sure, she was named Best Villain at last year's MTV Movie Awards ? beating out Colin Farrell, Mike Myers, Willem Dafoe and Daniel Day-Lewis for her golden popcorn trophy. But Chase hasn't let the goodies she gets for being bad go to her head. She's a good kid, but maybe too well trained. The young ... read more
