By the late 1950s, the popular formula B westerns were going through many changes to keep up with the increasingly sophisticated audiences. Gone were the days of handsome hero and villainous bad guys. The new cliches were drunken, cowardly anti-heros and Indians who finally were treated

like human beings. RIDE OUT FOR REVENGE is a classic example of the new formula. Bridges plays a corrupt cavalry officer who is put in charge of the Cheyenne migration from ancestral grounds to a reservation. When gold is discovered on the new property, the whites change their mind about where the

Indians should be placed. Calhoun is a cavalry scout who sympathizes with the displaced Indians and tries to get them some fair treatment, of course to no avail. This is a film full of good intentions, almost an apology for the countless number of films where the Indians were sadistic and

mindless. However, the action here is too melodramatic and overwrought with the new cliches. Direction is never sure which way to go, resulting in a film of mixed quality. Still it is an honest effort at changing some past Hollywood (as well as historical) misdeeds and worth a look.
