This could have been--and is--a very funny film; unfortunately, most of the laughs are unintentional. Mulligan, who was originally slated to direct the film and might have lent it a nice intentional comic spin, left the production when it was halted by an actors' strike after only four

days of shooting. When production resumed, 82-year-old Cukor, director of countless "women's pictures," was coaxed out of retirement to take over. Although his version of Van Druten's play "Old Acquaintance"is sexier than the original 1943 screen treatment (starring Bette Davis and Miriam

Hopkins), it also fails too satisfy on many levels. Bisset, a critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful novelist, and Bergen, who lives in Malibu with husband Selby, were classmates at Smith in the 1950s. Ten years later they meet again, and Bisset helps Bergen become a successful writer

of "trashy novels." As their lives again become intertwined, jealousy and infidelity come into play. This glossy soap opera suffers from Cukor's failure to control his actors. Moreover, the costumes are atrocious. The film simply lacks the sophisticated style that made Cukor famous.
