A depressingly inept satire of the movie business. Archie Powell (Martin Mull) and Charlie Slater (Dick Shawn, in his last screen appearance) are struggling filmmakers who specialize in documentaries. Shelley Berman, playing the local public television station manager, offers them the

chance to finish "Rented Lips," an "art" film he's financing; they agree on the condition that they also be allowed to use cast and crew to shoot their pet project, a documentary on Indian farming techniques. Mull is appalled to find that he's been engaged to film an exploitation epic about sexual

perversions in Nazi Germany, but he and Shawn struggle against time, money, and the machinations of a wacko preacher (Kenneth Mars) to get the movies in the can. Although Robert Downey, Jr. (son of the director) does a nice turn as the somewhat loony porno star Wolf Dengler, the project is

otherwise laugh-free. The nadir thus far for once-lauded director Downey, who authored the brilliantly tasteless PUTNEY SWOPE.
