An intense tale of eroticism and sexual power starring the dynamic Binoche (also seen this year in Jean-Luc Godard's HAIL, MARY) as an aspiring actress who loves to be on the stage as much as she likes to be under the covers. She is befriended by the shy Stanczak but is more interested in

his roommate, Wilson, an insensitive actor who makes a living by performing in sex shows. She and Wilson become lovers, but their relationship is cut short by his (accidental?) death. Haunted by the memory of Wilson's past and longing to have someone fill the emotional and sexual void he left

behind, Binoche struggles with his absence. Tired of her indecision, Stanczak leaves her. She meets up with Trintignant, a theater director who was preparing to star Wilson in a production of "Romeo and Juliet." She learns that Wilson had previously been on stage as Romeo, acting opposite his

wife, whose sudden death left Wilson emotionally crippled. Trintignant, as it turns out, is the dead girl's father. He is compelled to put Binoche in his daughter's role of Juliet, hoping to somehow re-create the emptiness he feels, but on stage Binoche discovers that she has indeed found her

Romeo after all. An interesting and technically astounding film, RENDEZVOUS compellingly tells its tale amid the pains and emptiness caused by death and the passion one still holds for his or her beloved, all of which is based in the background production of "Romeo and Juliet." The cast is

top-notch, as in so many of Techine's films--from its stars--Binoche, Stanczak, Wilson, and Trintignant--to the support of Wiazemsky and Lavanant. RENDEZVOUS received a film festival release in 1986. (In French; English subtitles.)
