A very good cast, an able director (Carol Reed, better known for THE THIRD MAN), a slick production, and an H.G. Wells story should add up to a fairly good movie, but something went wrong in this story about shop clerk Redgrave who remains a virtual nonentity until he becomes the heir to a

vast fortune. He is hoodwinked by society girl Wynwyard into marrying her, but at the last minute he backs out and runs off with his childhood sweetheart, Calvert. The two marry, but their marriage is marred when Calvert demands a simple existence while Redgrave is still flirting with the rich

ways he's acquired. However, Redgrave loses all his money which causes him and Calvert to lead a humble life ever after. The story takes place in a rural English community at the turn of the century which may be the problem with the picture: the characters are all so smug, it's hard to generate

any form of feeling for them.
