RED SALUTE is an anti-Communist picture that was so notorious it occasioned a riot by leftist students when it opened at New York's Rivoli Theatre. More than 150 students demonstrated and many were arrested. Constance Cummings was to have played the Stanwyck role but was replaced just

before shooting this attempt at another version of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. Stanwyck, in an unaccustomed part as a happy college girl, is the offspring of patriot Pratt, a general in the US Army. She gets romantically involved with Albright, another young student who has been seduced by Communist

propaganda. Pratt wants to put an end to their affair, so he sends Stanwyck down to Mexico for a vacation. There, she meets Young, a soldier, and they have a few adventures that include stealing Edwards' trailer--with him in it. Young is AWOL and in trouble already, but that's compounded when the

two steal a car to get back into the US where Young is arrested for having departed the service without leave. Stanwyck still plans to marry Albright, but Pratt senses that he might drive a wedge into that by using Young, so he has the soldier released from jail. Albright is speaking at a student

rally on behalf of the Communists, and Young, leading with his right, gets into a battle royal with Albright, whacks him heavily about the head and shoulders, and Stanwyck decides she would be better off with Young, to no one's surprise. Without the anti-red preaching, it might have been a good

comedy. Later, they did excise some of that and re-released the picture as RUNAWAY DAUGHTER. On TV, it might also be seen as HER ENLISTED MAN.
