A compelling but oddly empty film, RAGGEDY MAN stars Spacek as a young divorcee who struggles to raise her two sons in Texas during WWII. Since her divorce, she has been harassed by local low-lifes who believe that all divorced women are looking for stand-in husbands. Two men in particular

(Sanderson and Walker) have refused to leave her alone. Another local character, Shepard, a mysterious down-and-outer, also haunts Spacek's existence. Her life changes dramatically when Roberts, a young sailor, arrives on the scene and captivates both Spacek and her sons. His eventual departure,

however, sends the story rushing toward a disturbing climax that isn't completely in keeping with everything that has preceded it. Fine performances by Spacek and Roberts, combined with able direction from Spacek's husband, Fisk (directing his first feature), make this one well worth a look.
