Quest for fire: martial artiste Jean-Claude Van Damme

Apparently, earning pots of money as an international martial arts superstar just wasn't fulfilling enough for Jean-Claude Van Damme: He wanted to direct. The result is this simpleminded but lavishly appointed throwback to the early days of kickboxing flicks. After trifling with a Boys' Own adventure plot, assorted "exotic" locales and a few shreds of ersatz Eastern wisdom, Van Damme gets down to the real deal -- 40 minutes of wildly energetic, virtually ceaseless butt-kicking, featuring 16 different styles of martial arts. Anyone got a problem with that? Not us.
