Strizhenov plays a poverty-stricken officer in St. Petersburg. He becomes overwhelmed with the desire to acquire a large fortune. He learns about an old countess who became rich by means of a secret card hand learned from an old lover. Her success gained her the title "The Queen of

Spades." Through the woman's granddaughter (Krassina), with whom Strizhenov falls in love, he gains access to the old woman (Polevetskaya.) If she reveals the secret she will die, but Strizhenov's obsession is too great for him to care. When he approaches her with a pistol and demands the secret,

the old woman dies of fright. He later meets Krassina on a canal bank near the Winter Palace. A funeral procession goes by, and Polevetskaya's ghost appears. She reveals the three-card secret to the officer: a three, a seven, and an ace. Krassina tries to stop him from going to the gaming tables,

but, unable to dissuade him, drowns herself in the canal. While gambling, Strizhenov is challenged by Kulik, a prince once engaged to Krassina. The officer places the three and the seven down. He is shocked, however, when the Queen of Spades appears in place of the ace. He shoots himself and

crawls to the canal bank to die. As his life slips away, Krassina's scarf blows past him. This adaptation of the noted Pushkin story and Tchaikovsky opera was also filmed in Russia during the silent era in 1910 and 1916. This version is stark and cold but well played by members of the Bolshoi

Theater company. A British version was filmed in 1949.
