McShane is an American playwright living in Rome. Fearing both baldness and recurring dreams of a sex-craving gorilla, he consults Darden, a rather odd, bewigged shrink. In his sessions McShane discusses his past and present amours. He's got problems with his wife (Calder-Marshall), who is

having an affair with famed movie idol Gavin. Gavin is just using her to get McShane's play "When in Rome Do as the Romanians." This leads to a wild slapstick chase through a Roman film studio, where McShane's assorted lovers, his wife, and her lover inadvertently end up in a cheap western. The

movie ends as McShane finishes telling his story to Darden and suddenly the sex-starved gorilla of his dreams jumps in through the window. The film takes its title from the title song of the more successful WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT? This poor remake shows none of the wit or charm of Woody Allen's

script, and sorely misses the talents of Peter Sellers and Peter O'Toole as the shrink and patient. Instead, it's all reduced to a sniggering little boy sort of humor that is a spiritual kin to those cheap sex jokes traded in third grade. The final chase sequence had some potential, but is so

poorly done that it's hardly worth the effort. The direction shows absolutely no sense at all for comedy, with poorly timed sequences and an altogether unfunny series of gags. The players mug away to their hearts' content in an effort at zany humor, but it's all a waste of time and celluloid.
