This Italian comedy of errors reads like a macabre episode of "I Love Lucy." Tognazzi, Vianello, and Just are three out-of-work actors. They're rehearsing a crime scene in the bedroom of their boarding house, not realizing that their neighbor across the way (Focas, a local butcher) is

watching. He believes the trio is a group of professional killers and offers Tognazzi and Vianello money to kill his unfaithful wife, Vessel. The actors agree, hoping to obtain the much-needed cash without having to kill anyone. However, Vessel and her lover are creating some plans of their own.

Not knowing what her husband is up to, Vessel comes up with an idea to kill him: she plans to induce a heart attack. Through various mix-ups the two plots get screwed up and intertwined. When Focas actually does die of a heart attack, Vessel and her lover decide to kill the actors to cover

themselves. The evil pair lure the hapless actors to a sausage factory with plans to throw them into the mincemeat machines. But this is foiled by the police, who arrest Vessel and her lover for murder--a crime they ironically never actually committed. Freed from their burden, Tognazzi and

Vianello return once more to their struggling careers as actors.
