Three on a casting couch: Nathan Lane, Uma Thurman and Matthew Broderick
starstarstarstar
Broadway choreographer-turned-director Susan Stroman's garish adaptation of the monumentally successful musical, which brings Mel Brooks' 1968 film full circle, can be counted an unequivocal triumph on one level: It faithfully reproduces the experience of seeing a stage production from the front row, where dripping sweat, mucky makeup and clouds of saliva spray make the most glorious theatrical fantasy look tatty. Washed-up impresario Max Bialystock (Nathan Lane) is on his la... read more
  • Does Restless, Jerky Bourne-style Camera Work Make You Sick? | Ask FlickChick | 8/23/2007
Question: Much has been made about Paul Greengrass' handheld-camera work in The Bourne Ultimatum, and the fact that both Supremacy and Ultimatum have been hits makes me certain that filmmakers will keep doing it. But I can't be the only person who gets nauseous watching these films. The incessant movement is difficult to watch. Rarely does the camera stop long enough for the viewer to process a shot... even the quietest moments can't be still. Matt Damon is great and I'd like to say I enjoyed the movies, but when I have to go home and take something for headache and nausea, that can't be good. Am I alone in this? — DarylFlickChick: You're far from alone — some critics and a lot of moviegoers have complained about the restless, shaky handheld-camera work and superfast editing in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) in particular and movies in general. Filmmakers generally use restless, jittery camera work to establish a you-are-there atmosphere; sometimes it's meant to look as... read more

  • On Broadway: Will Dreamgirls Return to the Stage? | Today's News: Our Take | 1/29/2007
And I'm telling you, I'm not going... to pay a cent over $150 for tickets, should Dreamgirls return to Broadway, as is being discussed. "We're going to figure out how to do this," composer Henry Krieger tells the New York Post. "We think it's time. All is good." Though it's too soon to discuss details, insiders tell the Post that Jennifer Hudson may be asked to reprise her award-winning film role. Yeah, good luck with that. The Post also says there is talk that Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane might deliver a final encore, starting in May, as The Producers prepares to take its final bow on June 24. "[They] have always had a standing invitation to come back," says a show spokesperson. "They're family." Really? I mean, I knew about Lane, but.... read more
