Reportedly the first student feature made at Oxford University, PRIVILEGED not only launched the careers three British actors who have since made names for themselves in other films--James Wilby (MAURICE; A HANDFUL OF DUST), Imogen Stubbs (A SUMMER STORY), and Hugh Grant (MAURICE)-- but

it was also the first collaboration of the filmmaking team of Americans Rick Stevenson and Michael Hoffman (RESTLESS NATIVES; PROMISED LAND), who met as Oxford graduate students. The film, however, centers on a group of undergraduates. Freshman Woolley fancies himself an actor, and his part in a

student production of "The Duchess of Malfi" gives him the chance to try to seduce the leading lady. But she gives Woolley the cold shoulder, and he turns his gaze to the wife of the aristocratic Grant. Life begins to parallel the play when Grant catches Woolley with his wife and and challenges

him to a duel with pistols. Rather than kill Woolley, Grant shoots himself during the duel. Although the production has lots of energy, the inexperience of the cast and crew is obvious. John Schlesinger acted as a consulting director on this project, which was filmed in 16mm.
