Gelin, a sailor, makes a pilgrimage to Hamburg in an attempt to locate Neff, the girl who had befriended him 10 years earlier when he was a prisoner of war in Germany. Unexpectedly, he finds her in that city's famed sin section, the Reeperbahn, where she ekes out a precarious existence

in a sleazy bistro, mud-wrestling other feckless frauleins for the entertainment of minor hoodlums and pimps. Tired and listless, dreading the demeaning drama she enacts nightly, she welcomes the reappearance of her sailor suitor; though he has married, they fall in love. He promises to return to

her that same evening, only to be knifed to death by a robber. When Gelin fails to return to her, the newly hopeful Neff assumes she has been deserted. Despondent over this further denigration, she commits suicide. Director Allegret covered much the same waterfront in his DEDEE (1949). He didn't

get it right this time, either. (In French; English subtitles.)
