This Japanese melodrama depicts the life of geisha-girl Negishi's illegitimate daughter Atsumi, who grows up to be a beautiful and hard-working young woman who studies to be a dressmaker. Looking upon Atsumi as the only thing she has done right in her life, Negishi allows nothing to

spoil her daughter's future. When her latest lover forces himself on Atsumi, Negishi kills the man and is sent to prison. Shattered, Atsumi becomes a hostess in a nightclub and plays cards with the male customers, who can only sleep with her if they win. Being a brilliant card-player, Atsumi

manages to spend more time at the tables than on the bed. When the owner of the club expresses his desire to make her his mistress, Atsumi declines and tells of her love for Kawazu. Soon after, the owner dies and Kawazu conceives a child with Atsumi so that she can claim the child is that of the

owner, enabling her to inherit his fortune.
