Before Molly Ringwald made a name for herself in 1984's teen hit SIXTEEN CANDLES, she had a few lesser-known roles, as in P.K. & THE KID, a 1982 film that was shelved until surfacing in 1987 on videocassette. P.K. (Ringwald) is a likable 15-year-old who runs away from home because her

stepfather (Alex Rocco) is a cruel, sadistic man who is constantly pawing her. She meets up with Kid Kane (Paul LeMat), a pickup-driving nobody who dreams of winning a national arm-wrestling contest and becoming a somebody. The two travel together, meeting a variety of characters along the way.

The greatest obstacle the pair must face is P.K.'s stepfather, who is determined to get her back home. P.K. & THE KID offers a fairly standard plot, stereotypical characters, and a colorful arm-wrestling background--all of which add up to average entertainment. What makes the film watchable is the

chemistry between LeMat and Ringwald. While the script is clumsy at times, the movie is well intentioned enough to overcome this handicap. A special mention has to go to Rocco, who is especially creepy as the vile stepfather. Although there is some rough language and some very brief nudity, P.K. &

THE KID is still probably a good choice for young viewers because, unlike so many films today, it takes a positive moral stance.
