Between the devil and the deep blue sea: Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom
starstarstarstar
High-seas high jinks have been bombing at the box office ever since Gene Kelly tap-danced his way through The Pirate, so it came as no small surprise when this mega-budget gamble — based on a theme-park ride, no less — turned out to be the summer blockbuster of 2003. All the genre conventions are here — a damsel in distress (Keira Knightley), a lovesick blacksmith (Orlando Bloom), a chest of cursed Aztec gold — but what pulls it all together is Johnny Depp's hilarious turn as shipless pirate Jack Sparrow. With his mustache and Maybelline, he's one part Errol Flynn to two parts Keith Richards and the movie would be nothing without him. Yo ho ho and a bottle of fun. I'm glad you liked High School Musical 2, but I just couldn't watch it. I stumbled onto the original movie and found it entertaining enough (my child is too old for Disney; I sometimes watch it in secret. I love Kim Possible!). So over the weekend I thought I'd catch HSM2 ? I couldn't get through the opening 15 minutes. I know that music ? and Zac Efron ? are the stars of this show, but the plot should at least be halfway plausible. Instead it was contrived and flimsier than a stripper's veil: . read more
  • Pirates, He-Man Returns , Kill Bill and More | Ask FlickChick | 6/6/2007
Questions about Pirates, the He-Man movie and what became of that extended DVD of Kill Bill.Send your movie questions to FlickChick.See Maitland McDonagh and Ken Fox review this week's new flicks in Movie Talk!Question: Is this the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie or are they going to make a fourth? -- RussellFlickChick: I'd say the odds are good that there will be a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, but it's not a sure thing. Assuming that you've seen Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End – and why would you be asking otherwise? – you know it sets up the possibility that Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and who knows who else will embark on a quest for the fountain of youth. Involved parties have alluded vaguely to various possibilities in promotional interviews for World's End.Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Australia's Herald Sun that "This is the end [of the current trilogy], but whether one of the characters or a couple of the characters continue on, it's... read more
  • Pirates, '70s Hottie P.J. Soles, Bruce Campbell and More Questions! | Ask FlickChick | 5/31/2007
Questions about motion capture animation -- is it cheating? -- John Wayne, P.J. Soles and more. Send your movie questions to FlickChick.See Maitland McDonagh and Ken Fox review this week's new flicks in Movie Talk!Question: I've been reading a lot about the behind-the-scenes technology used to created the tentacle-faced Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and keep seeing the term "motion capture." But none of the articles have explained how it's different from old-fashioned rotoscoping. Can you enlighten me, oh FlickChick? -- BradFlickChick: The difference is computers. Rotoscoping is a process invented by animation pioneer Max Fleischer -- creator of Betty Boop -- in 1914. It allowed artists to hand-draw over motion picture footage of real subjects frame-by-frame so that the instantly recognizable weight and flow of real human motion was maintained while the specifics of the image could be changed to the animator's... read more
  • Pirates of the Caribbean Secrets Revealed | Ask FlickChick | 10/13/2006
Question: I have two questions about Pirates of the Caribbean. First, Captain Sparrow and Miss Swann sing a song when they're stranded on the island, something about "yo-ho" and rum — what is it? And second, where did the term Davy Jones' locker come from? I know it refers to the bottom of the sea, but why?FlickChick: The sea shanty Swann and Sparrow warble has a venerable history. The first lines are:Fifteen men on the dead man's chest/Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!/Drink and the devil had done for the rest/Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! They were penned by 19th-century writer Robert Louis Stevenson for his 1882 adventure novel Treasure Island, a motherload of popular pirate lore and imagery. Apparently Stevenson was inspired by a about legendary buccaneer Edward Teach (c.1680-1718), better known as Blackbeard, who is said to have marooned a ship full of mutinous sailors on a tiny island popularly referred to as "Dead Man's Chest" and returned to find that most of them had... read more
  • October 5, 2006: The Ghost of Billy | Survivor: Cook Islands | 10/6/2006
You know, there really may be something to this whole karma thing. It’s almost too delicious to see J.P. and Ozzy knocked down a peg. Ozzy, mastermind of the Billy ouster, has done his best to keep himself in the game ever since the merge. He has been running around in the challenges like nobody's business, diving, swimming, doing whatever it takes to keep his group from going to tribal council. Back at camp he's hauling in fish left and right and making sure everyone knows it. Don't worry, Poseidon, they noticed. J.P., on the other hand, cluelessly set himself up for the fall. It's never a smart move in Survivor to let the tribe see you proudly doing nothing (wasn't that Billy's crime?). But to proudly do nothing and command the others from your perch? Uh-uh. Emperor J.P. surely wore no clothes. I'm so proud of the ladies (and Brad) for their sneak attack. With J.P. voted out, the women of Raro have wrested the power from their big, strong men, but Parvati may soon have her... read more
