PIRANHA is an early effort from Joe Dante, the director of THE HOWLING; GREMLINS; and INNERSPACE, in which he successfully combines laughs and chills in a parody of JAWS. Menzies is a detective out to trace a missing couple who have disappeared somewhere in the woods. During her search

she meets up with the reclusive Dillman, whose help she enlists. Together they trace the couple to a supposedly deserted Army base, where they drain a pool to see what is on the bottom. Only after it's too late do they learn that they've released a school of superbred killer piranha into the

river--an indestructible strain of fish that doctor McCarthy developed years ago for the Army as a way to infest the rivers of Vietnam and slow down the Viet Cong. Now, thanks to the brilliance of Menzies and Dillman, the piranha are heading for a children's summer camp, and when they're finished

snacking on the kiddies, they're going to check out the grand opening of a new lakeside resort. The silliness of the whole concept is handled with a sly sense of humor by director Dante, with some tongue-in-cheek appearances by Keenan Wynn, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Bartel, Barbara Steele, and Dick

Miller adding to the fun. Much credit must also go to John Sayles (the director of THE RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS SEVEN; MATEWAN; and EIGHT MEN OUT), who wrote the intelligent, witty, and purposely ludicrous script.
