Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks

The first mainstream Hollywood film to deal with the subject of AIDS, and one of the few to feature gay characters in a serious dramatic context. Tom Hanks, who won his first of two consecutive Oscars for his performance here, stars as a gay corporate lawyer who is fired from the firm when his employers learn that he is HIV-positive. With his faith in the law firmly in place, and a little help from a local ambulance chaser (Denzel Washington), he decides to sue. Read the complete review for Philadelphia
