Another Warner Bros. 3-D horror extravaganza, PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE is, unfortunately, nowhere near as good as the studio's previous effort, HOUSE OF WAX. Basically a remake of MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1932), this version stars an unbelievably hammy Karl Malden as a crazed

scientist/zookeeper who hypnotizes a big ape (played by a monkey-suited Charles Gemora, who appeared in the 1932 version) and sends it out to kill all the good-looking women who won't have anything to do with the scientist. Malden frames professor Forrest as the murderer so that he can move in on

Forrest's girl, Medina. The ape falls in love with her also, which causes a considerable amount of tension between Malden and his hairy buddy. In the climax, most of the animals in the zoo run loose while Malden goes completely off his rocker. To make watching this uninteresting film a little more

interesting, try to spot Merv Griffin in the background as a college student.
