Cuba's first musical comedy is filled with hip-swinging socialist honeys, catchy tunes, beauties in bikinis, and lots of Hispanic hoofing, all in joyful homage to the big-budget Hollywood musicals of the 1950s. Loosely based on an African Yoruba legend, the story line follows the

grasshopper-and-the-ant fable. Macho-man Benavides lives on his wife's income and spends his time strutting and preening, importuning the local ladies, while hard-working tractor driver Arredondo toils at a farm collective. With many snipes at the bureaucracy and at the swaggering male of Hispanic

tradition, the picture culminates in a boxing match between the adversaries, where the referee is Death (don't worry--loser Benavides is far too charming not to be revived). It's all done with campy panache and lots of tunes. (In Spanish; English subtitles.)
