Unable to make it as a mystery writer, Berle must turn to his wife (Hughes) for financial support. His problem is that he writes mysteries so confusing that even he can't figure them out. Upon visiting his wife's office, he overhears a conversation among the business partners. It seems

their boss committed suicide over their nefarious schemes. Berle is struck by inspiration. Here's a real mystery! He has himself arrested as the murderer, figuring he'll be able to concoct a nifty idea to work himself out of the rap. But this backfires, and Berle ends up on trial for murder. In

the courtroom he reveals the truth, but not before some close shaves. This is a clever, well-written little film. Though it requires the audience to suspend their disbelief for all of 67 minutes, it's well worth the effort. Berle, in one of his earliest appearances, is absolutely wonderful, making

this comedy funny and nearly believable.
