A disappointing satire that pokes at the Catholic Church without ever really puncturing it. Rey is a cardinal who returns to his hometown after 30 years to find his illegitimate daughter by a servant girl. The servant girl has long since married a shepherd; the daughter, Abril, has become

a prostitute, who in turn has also borne a daughter out of wedlock. This granddaughter lives with Rey's Marxist doctor brother, Rabal, whose main entertainment in life is insulting the church and his brother. Rey tries to convince Abril to marry Rabal, offering her a large inheritance. The

potential of this film was considerable. Rey and Rabal had starred in Luis Bunuel's anticlerical masterpiece, VIRIDIANA; Abril has been noteworthy in a number of films, most recently in L'ADDITION. All these performers seem to be giving their all to the project. The writing, however, or the

direction, or the editing, always undercuts any effort to really sting the target. The picture is still worth seeing, though, just for the pleasure of watching Rey and Rabal.
