A disappointing picture despite a good performance from Robinson, OPERATION X never gets on its feet. Robinson is a tough, megalomaniacal businessman who can never forget his early years as a shoeshine boy in Constantinople. He would like to be the richest man in the world and will stop

at nothing in that attempt. Next to his love of money, he most loves his daughter, Cummins, feeling far more affection for her than for his colorless wife, Swinburne. Robinson has a master plan for amassing a fortune, which he calls Operation X. In order to put the scheme in place, he must secure

a rare material that can be found only in an unnamed Arab country ruled by Illing. Robinson's Machiavellian mind concocts a plan to marry Cummins to Illing's son, Villa. With that taken care of, he can tap the country's resources. But Cummins is affianced to Greene, a bright young newsman who has

been doing some undercover investigating about Robinson's plan. When Robinson learns of Greene's snooping, he tosses the man out. Swinburne knows how much Cummins loves Greene, so she pleads with Robinson to allow the young woman to have happiness with Greene rather than force her into a marriage

of financial convenience. Robinson refuses, whereupon Swinburne tosses the bombshell information that Cummins is not his real daughter! Well, that puts a crimp in Robinson's collar (which he gets very hot under), and Robinson goes nuts. The picture is told in flashback, so we already know his

elevator doesn't reach the top floor and it's only a matter of unspooling the story to get to the end. Bland and boring, despite Robinson's attempts to raise the level of the movie from the bargain basement.
