An attempt to recreate the assassination of the brutal Nazi Reinhard Heydrich by the Czech underground during WW II. Heydrich was the leader of the Nazi occupation forces in Czechoslavakia, and his callous treatment of the Czechs earned him the nickname of "the Hangman." Bottoms, Shaw, and

Ackland play British-trained Czechs who leave their London base and parachute into their homeland to kill Heydrich. They miss their first opportunity but are successful the second time around when they toss a grenade into his car. In retaliation for the assassination, the Nazis annihilate the

entire town of Lidice. Shaw, in an effort to protect his wife and child, turns his cohorts in and they are trapped, with other freedom fighters, in a cathedral where they valiantly hold off a Nazi battalion. Eventually, Bottoms and Shaw are the only survivors, and they kill themselves to avoid

capture. The story sticks pretty closely to actual events, but it still is lacking in drama. Bottoms is miscast as the hero, never quite conveying the strength and determination the role required. This was the second time this story had been the basis for a film. Fritz Lang filmed a less accurate

and no more successful version in 1943, called HANGMEN ALSO DIE.
