The talents on both sides of the camera are mildly impressive, but OFF BEAT is a bland, wholly contrived comedy that fails to deliver any solid humor. Abe Washington (Cleavant Derricks) is a undercover cop on the trail of a long-sought-after drug dealer. Just as he and his fellow officers

are about to take their man, Abe's buddy, Joe (Judge Reinhold), comes along and accidently blows his friend's carefully constructed cover. As a punishment, Abe is forcibly volunteered to audition for a benefit show that will feature a troupe of dancing cops. Figuring he owes his pal one, Joe

agrees to take Abe's place, though he's not thrilled about impersonating a police officer. At the audition, Joe is attracted to Rachel (Meg Tilly), a would-be dancer cum cop. In hopes of impressing her, Joe wins a spot in the show. However, when Abe hears the news, he is terrified someone will

find out and get him in big trouble. Reinhold and Tilly are an attractive team, but the potential humor within their romance is consistently subordinated to a series of forced and largely unfunny plot developments.
