A surprisingly effective film, OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN pits a successful advertising executive, Bart (Peter Weller), against a super-intelligent female rat in his newly renovated Manhattan townhouse. After his wife and son go off on vacation, Weller is left home alone to do battle with the huge

sewer rat that has invaded. The battle grows as Bart comes home from work each night for more search-and-destroy tactics. Directed with flair by George Pan Cosmatos (RAMBO) and filled with sly references to Moby Dick and The Old Man and the Sea, this film is a successful blend of terror and humor,

played with some real fervor by Weller. It's also better than any of the Cosmatos-Sylvester Stallone efforts.
